The history of Ankola is very ancient, however a written history back to Kadamba period isn’t available.

The Banavasi Kadamba dynasty was sprawled in Uttara Kannada during 280 BC. The Rashtrakuta dynasty began ruling over Karnataka when Dantidurga defeated Kirtivarma of Chalukya dynasty during 735 BC.

During 1336 BC, the Vijayanagara summary was established which was then ruled by Portuguese after the death of Krishnadevaraya and they occupied ankola in 1540 BC.

Portuguese were attacked by Bijapur and Ahmadnagar army from 1565 to 1570 which diverted their attention towards Goa.

According to historians, Ankola was later ruled by Shareef-ul-Mulkan during 1650 to 1672, during which Maratha’s Shivaji attacked Ankola in the year 1663.

Ankola was one of the 16 districts of Canara during 1720, however during 1730 Ankola & Konkan was in the possession of Kolhapur kings.

After Tippu Sultan’s death in the 4th Anglo Mysore was during 1799, Ankola along with 16 districts were under British Govt. It was later looted by pirates during 1800 according to Thomas Menron’s writing.

Ancient Karnataka’s West coast of is spread over two parts, Konkan and Kerala. Towards South of Ankola’s Gangavali river is Kerala with prime culture & to the North is Konkan with Totemism culture. Ankola is the confluence of people from two different cultures.
