Education
The city and the taluk has a number of Government, Government Aided and Private educational institutions. The few known private Primary and High Schools are Nirmala Hridaya, PMHS, Jaycee School, Shri Manjunath Swamy High School, Jai Hind High School, KLE’s (Karnataka Lingayat Education) institutions. There are Governments Schools are in city and village areas with full student strength.
Ankola taluk also has seen an increasing number of Pre-University colleges being established in the recent years.
PM High School, Peoples Multi-purpose High School (PMHS), Ankola (1953) is one of the oldest high schools in Uttar Kannada district. It was the first high school founded by the Kanara Welfare Trust by Dinakar Desai. This high school has been upgraded as composite PU College (Arts) since June 1993. This school has celebrated its 60 years. The school has curriculum both Kannada and English medium.
The Institution has a Students Co-Operative Store, where the students get all the educational materials and uniforms at a concessional price.
Jai Hind High school, Ankola is one of the oldest high schools in Uttar Kannada.
The high school was built in 1896 during British people rule in India. Formerly it was known as Edward New English School. The school was built by Vamanrao M.Dubhashi.
Nirmala Hrudaya English School. The first English medium school in the town.
Gokhale Centenary College or GC College known by the people. One of the famous College in the district is Gokhale Centenary College offers various Under Graduate and Graduate and also limited postgraduate courses. This college was established in 1966 by Dinakara Desai. It is the first college of the Kanara Welfare Trust while the trust is managing many high schools, primary schools and other institutions in Uttar Kannada district.
Established in June 1966, the birth centenary year of Gopal Krishna Gokhale, the college is aptly named after him.
KLE (Karnataka Lingayat Education). The renowned educational institution in the India and in the Asian Continent.
It has University and Pre – University Institution. It offers various courses . The Teachers Training (B.Ed, D.Ed), Nursing Science, Commerce and Arts. The KLE runs specifically a Pre University college for women. It has hostel for working women in their campus.
Government Degree College In 2007, Government First Grade College was started in Poojageri (2 km from Ankola) with a whopping student strength.
A sprawling 5 acre campus located 3 Kms from KSRTC Bus Station is an eye catching sight to any passers by on Basgod Road. A historically significant hillock where freedom fighters of the place prepared salt to defy British monstrous rule, now contributes to liberate local poor and downtrodden people from the evils of socio – economic backwardness.
This college offers bachelor’s degree in Arts, Science, Commerce and Business Administration.
